When it comes to storing personal and sensitive information that is precious to me I always had problems like you have. Then I started using Evernote to store scraps of information that has been useful for me all through these years, but the lack of security/password protection in the application is a notable drawback because for instance if I login to the Evernote app and remain it open, anyone who has access to my computer or mobile phone or even those people who have access to the local database storage file of my computer can view the notes and gain access to my worthy and sensitive information, of which I am the owner !

This really is a critical situation for me also for you, isn’t it ? Fortunately, Evernote provides users with a very versatile feature that allows you to encrypt part of your notes. You can use it to encrypt sensitive text in your notes (Note: It is only compatible with text). If you don’t know how to encrypt notes in Evernote, follow the steps given below:

Step#1: Open the note that you want to encrypt, highlight/select the text that you want to Encrypt and right click on it and select “Encrypt Selected Text”, this can also be done by highlighting the text and by pressing “Ctrl+Shift+X”.

Step#2: Clicking on the option will pop-up a new box that only appears the first time you encrypt your notes

Step#3: Decide for and fill in an encryption passphrase (case-sensitive) and type the same passphrase in the second field and add a hint which is however optional but advisable to provide a hint, in case if you forget your password the hint will help you to remember. This passphrase will perform as a password while accessing encrypted Evernote notes. For safety measures it is wise to uncheck the box next to “Remember passphrase until I quit Evernote”. This will make certain that you will be prompted for a passphrase each time you want to access an encrypted note, so that the password may not be saved and let others access your encrypted notes in your absence.

Step#4: Click on Ok and that’s it ! The note will now be encrypted and only be accessible when you enter the password. You can encrypt other notes too now without the need of creating a new passphrase.

Additional Piece of Information:

Once you have encrypted your Evernote notes, you will have to insert a password to access it on any device or on the internet. So opt for a very effective as well as memorable passphrase.

Remember! Evernote will not be able to search for notes if you encrypt the complete text, so you’ll have to leave some part of the text unencrypted. This text may include keywords or phrases that will let you to search the notes using Evernote.
